Resumen de Adam Smith y la igualdad: Continuidades y tensiones dentro de su teoría

El presente artículo se propone abordar la obra de Adam Smith con el objeto de identificar una posible “teoría sobre la igualdad” en el corpus del filósofo escocés. Nuestro planteamiento cuestiona el ideario colectivo en torno a este autor, según el cual se lo caracteriza como cercano al anti-igualitarismo de ciertas corrientes liberales. Basándonos en investigaciones hechas en los últimos años por algunos estudiosos de Smith, expondremos argumentos e ideas presentes en su obra que se pueden asociar a posiciones igualitaristas y que muestran que su postura sobre este tema es más compleja de lo que se cree. En esta línea, con el fin de evidenciar la posición de Smith acerca de la igualdad, presentaremos su concepción sobre el surgimiento de la desigualdad y ciertas ideas plasmadas en La Riqueza de las Naciones y en Teoría de los Sentimientos Morales relevantes para la discusión. En esta tarea, tomaremos como principal referente el trabajo de Samuel Fleischacker, cuya interpretación de Smith -que será complementada con análisis propios- tenemos también el objeto de difundir.

The purpose of this article is to approach the work of Adam Smith in order to identify a possible “theory of equality” in the corpus of the Scottish philosopher. Our approach questions the collective ideology surrounding this author, according to which he is characterized as being close to the anti-egalitarianism of certain liberal currents. Based on research carried out in recent years by some of Smith’s scholars, we will present arguments and ideas present in his work that can be associated with egalitarian positions and that show that his position on this issue is more complex than is commonly believed. In this line, in order to demonstrate Smith’s position on equality, we will present his conception of the emergence of inequality and certain ideas expressed in the Wealth of Nations and The Theory of Moral Sentiments that are relevant to the discussion. In this task, we will take as our main reference the work of Samuel Fleischacker, whose interpretation of Smith – which will be complemented with our own analysis – we also intend to disseminate.
