El viaje de Magallanes-Elcano ha pasado a la historia por ser el primero que dio la vuelta al mundo, pero este no era el objetivo del mismo, ni siquiera estaba previsto que eso tuviera lugar. En realidad, el viaje se trató como una auténtica misión comercial a las Molucas, en busca de especias a través de una ruta más ventajosa que las tradicionales. La Corona financió en gran parte la expedición, por lo que dio unas Instrucciones muy concretas para el éxito del viaje. Este artículo presenta cómo la expedición se ajustó a ellas unas veces, e improvisó en otras.

The Magellan-Elcano voyage has gone down in history for being the first to go around the world, but that was not its objective, it was not even planned for it to take place. In fact, the trip was organized as a formal trade mission to the Moluccas, in search of spices through a more advantageous route than the traditional ones. The Crown largely financed the expedition, for which it gave very specific Instructions for the success of the trip. This article presents how the expedition adjusted to them at times, and improvised at others.
