    In their garden practice and discourse, the British show a bitter hostility towards certain horticultural uses and misuses and a willingness to act with nature by placing a high premium on the ideas of diversity, surprise, respect, and self-management which echo today’s preoccupations. In the recent historiography of “English” gardens, the central place allocated to nature, as well to the care for the immediate environment of habitat, has been relegated to second place after a political and/or artistic explanation (the pictorial paradigm). This article highlights the importance of the commitment to “nature”, wildness and the idea of an ‘invisible hand’. In choosing an artistic posture of invisibility the British forged an image of man “serving” nature; the art of the landscape gardener hides by means of nature – by means of thinking out, respecting and caring for biodiversity as well as being unobtrusive

    Les Britanniques au 18e siècle témoignent dans leur pratique et leur discours des jardins d’une virulence contre certains usages et mésusages horticoles et d’une volonté d’agir avec la nature en valorisant les idées de diversité, de surprise, de respect, et d’autogestion, qui résonnent dans les préoccupations contemporaines. Dans l’historiographie récente des jardins « anglais », la place centrale accordée à la nature, ainsi qu’au soin pour l’environnement immédiat de l’habitat, a été reléguée au second plan, au profit de la dimension politique et de la dimension artistique (le paradigme pictural). Cet article met en lumière l’importance de l’engagement envers la nature, de la wildness, et de l’idée d’une « main invisible ». En prônant une posture artistique d’invisibilité, les Britanniques créèrent une image de l’homme « serviteur » de la nature ; l’art du jardinier paysagiste se dissimule à force de nature – à force de penser, de respecter, de soigner la diversité du vivant et de rester en retrait
