Despite the advances in assisted reproductive technologies (ARTs) (Niederberger et al. 2018), conventional IVF treatments are still inefficient in a significant percentage of infertile women, with many ultimately ending-up being enrolled in egg donation programs (Trounson et al., 1983; Lutjen et al., 1984;
Sauer et al., 1990). Although the use of donated oocytes is usually an effective approach in IVF treatments, the resultant children are not genetically related to the intended mothers.
Therefore, it is desirable to develop new reproductive strategies that can give these patients higher chances of having a child genetically related to them.
Oocyte quality is usually defined as the ability of an oocyte to develop after fertilization into a chromosomally normal blastocyst with potential to sustain a pregnancy up to a healthy live birth.
