    The “Henri Wallon Centre”, inaugurated in 1976 by René Zazzo, was founded by Robert and Marie-Rose Debot-Sevrin with the idea of developing multidisciplinary therapeutic interventions for children with autism. These interventions are based on Henri Wallon’s conceptions of development. The initial hypothesis was that the emotional and tonic functions have not been properly organized in the initial development of children with autism. The therapeutic approach will have thus to instore a structuring intervention program via the exercise of the emotional and tonic function. The first step of this therapeutic approach consists in providing the children with pleasant stimulations, at the level of the organic and sensory sensitivity. Thanks to these stimulations the therapists trigger off reactions connected with pleasure which will lead to changes in tonicity and in facial expressions connected with the hedonistic character of the sensorial sensitivity. At the beginning of the intervention program, the favoured medium is the sense of touch. Working in water allows to stimulate at the same time contact at skin level, while associating this with the child’s look, the hearing canal, and the labyrinthine and articular stimulations. The pursuit of the intervention program will aim at developing the other stages of the development of the child such as described by Henri Wallon.

    Le centre Henri Wallon, inauguré en 1976 par René Zazzo, a été fondé par Robert et Marie-Rose Debot-Sevrin avec l’idée de développer des interventions thérapeutiques pluridisciplinaires pour enfants avec autisme basées sur les conceptions walloniennes du développement. Notre hypothèse de départ étant que chez ces enfants avec autisme, la fonction émotivo-tonique ne s’est pas bien organisée dans leur développement initial, l’approche thérapeutique devra en engager une restructuration.

    Pour parvenir à restructurer la fonction émotivo-tonique, la première étape de cette approche thérapeutique consiste à procurer aux enfants des stimulations agréables, au niveau des sensibilités organiques et sensorielles. Par ces stimulations, les thérapeutes déclenchent des réactions de plaisir qui vont s’exprimer par des modifications du tonus et des expressions faciales en rapport avec le caractère hédonique de la sensibilité sensorielle. En début de prise en charge, le canal privilégié est celui du toucher. Le travail dans l’eau permet de stimuler le contact au niveau de la peau, tout en y associant le regard, le canal auditif, les stimulations labyrinthiques et articulaires. La poursuite de l’intervention thérapeutique vise ensuite à développer les autres étapes du développement de l’enfant telles que décrites par Henri Wallon.
