This study demonstrates that a quantitative and qualitative analysis of empirical data is indispensable for the development of an adequate terminology for the so called “parenthetic verbs”. The point of departure is that the term ‘parenthetic’ describes the use of the verb only syntactically, leaving aside the functions the verb fulfils. So the study claims that the terms "relativizing fragment" and “communicative fragment” are more appropriate to describe this use.
