Resumen de Un realismo para la epidemiología: Metafísica reológica de los estados de salud de las poblaciones humanas

  La epidemiología está filosóficamente marcada por la encrucijada que conforman los polos “realista” o “naturalista”, por un lado, y el “idealista” o “constructivista”, por otro. Las virtudes del primero parecen ser sus resultados técnicos y la universalización de sus conceptos; sus defectos, el ignorar tanto la contextualidad como la influencia que los valores sociales tienen en las definiciones y decisiones sobre la salud y la enfermedad. El segundo goza del privilegio de recuperar tal circunstancialidad e impronta cultural, bajo riesgo de propugnar la irrealidad de los estados de salud y enfermedad. El pragmatismo y el instrumentalismo aparecen en la disputa como válvulas de escape más o menos provisionales. En esta querella, se pretende mostrar cómo una filosofía reológica puede superar satisfactoriamente las contradicciones expuestas, salvando la realidad en todos sus momentos.

  Epidemiology is philosophically marked by the crossroad that two opposites conform: on the one hand, the “realist” or “naturalist” view; on the other hand, the “idealist” or “constructivist” one. The virtues that the former seems to offer are that it is especially compatible with technical results and universalization of the concepts of medicine and other health sciences, and its flaws that it ignores both contextuality of those results and concepts and the influence of social value on definitions and decisions over health and illness. On the other side, the latter proposes itself as capable of recovering that contextuality and the cultural imprint, though with the risk of proclaiming that states of health and illness are somehow irreal. Instrumentalism and pragmatism appear in the middle of the dispute as a kind of “relief valve” more or less provisional. In this situation, the aim is to show how a reological philosophy can successfully overcome the exposed contradictions, saving each one of the moments of reality.
