En los últimos años ha aumentado mucho la cantidad de residuos que se generan a diario en las instituciones sanitarias. Cada vez se utilizan más materiales de un solo uso y la gran variedad de técnicas actuales requieren materiales de diversos tipos, algunos de ellos potencialmente peligrosos. Para evitar riesgos para la salud y el medio ambiente la gestión de los residuos sanitarios ha de ser controlada. Para cumplir con ello se ha desarrollado la legislación tanto a nivel estatal como en cada Comunidad Autónoma.

In recent years, the amount of waste generated daily in health institutions has increased a lot. More and more single-use materials are used and the great variety of current techniques require materials of various types, some of them potentially dangerous. To avoid risks to health and the environment, the management of medical waste must be controlled. To comply with this, legislation has been developed both at the state level and in each Autonomous Community.
