    El tromboembolismo pulmonar es una patología con alta morbimortalidad por su gran variabilidad clínica y su difícil diagnóstico. Varios estudios postmortem han reflejado la baja frecuencia diagnóstica de esta enfermedad, así como la alta mortalidad en la primera hora del suceso y la diferencia en mortalidad entre los tratados y los no tratados después de esa hora.

    Estos datos reflejan la importancia de un diagnóstico precoz para iniciar el tratamiento oportuno y disminuir la mortalidad. A través de esta revisión vamos a conocer mejor las principales causas de TEP, la clínica que presentan estos pacientes y los métodos de los que se disponen para identificar de forma temprana esta patología.

    Pulmonary thromboembolism is a pathology with high morbidity and mortality due to its high clinical scarcity and its difficult diagnosis. Several postmortem studies have reflected the low diagnostic frequency of this disease, as well as the high mortality in the first hour of the event and the mortality difference between treated and untreated patients after that hour.

    These data reflect the importance of an early diagnosis to initiate timely treatment and reduce mortality. Through this review we are going to learn more about the main causes of PE, the symptoms that these patients present and the methods available to identify this pathology in early stages.
