This contribution intends to feed the debate on the epilogue of the life of the Grand Duchess Joanna of Austria (1547 - 1578). She arrived at the Medici court in December 1565 to marry Francesco, son of Cosimo I and bring prestige to the Grand Duchy. The twelve Florentine years are known for obscure matrimonial aspects, centered on an unprepared and cruel popular narrative. Her life is generally known for having passively suffered marital betrayal, and for not having distinguished herself for particular political and intellectual abilities. By analyzing testimonies and letters, we intend to better understand the nature of her unhappiness.
