Peer tutoring applied in biostatistics at the master degree

    • Peer tutoring (PT) is a different concept in teaching and learning process. It is based on the interaction between two students. One act as tutor, and taught specific content to the other, which act as pupil. This kind of learning has the support from the teacher, who leads and supervises the process. Therefore, it is neither a non-competitive nor an individualistic learning concept as the traditional method is, but a collaborative mechanism that aims to develop teamwork habits, solidarity between partners, and independent student participation in their own learning process. Besides, both tutor and pupil increases their knowledge about the topic.This work shows some experiences of PT applied to the theoretical subject “Biostatistics”, which is taught in the Master of Analytical Techniques in the Clinical Laboratory at the University Jaume I. The PT has been carried out with the students working in pairs. They assume the role of the teacher and explain several exercises to-be-solved. The purpose is that they indicate what is asked in the exercise, the correct test that have to be used to solve the problem, and the most common mistakes. The whole process of PT has been always supervised by the corresponding teachers.
