    El artículo presenta las opiniones de George Santayana sobre la sociedad y el estado recogidas en La vida de la razón y Dominaciones y potestades.

    Santayana sostiene que solo los estados y sociedades mejor adaptados son capaces de ganar la carrera de la desigualdad y lucha por la supervivencia, que son las fuerzas directoras de la sociedad. Para llegar a ser una sociedad libre, sin embargo, una sociedad debe evitar ser dominada por el espíritu del mercantilismo, las relaciones materiales de dependencia, la búsqueda del beneficio y el maníaco deseo de ganancias: algo posible solo en una sociedad liberal. Aunque las ideas santayanianas sobre la sociedad y el Estado puedan parecer utópicas bajo las presentes circunstancias de la vida real, con todo, sus ideas sobre el papel crucial de Estados Unidos estableciendo y manteniendo un orden mundial justo y liberal son ahora incluso más relevantes que antes. Esa idea es muy necesaria, especialmente hoy, bajo las condiciones de la agresión militar de la Federación Rusa contra Ucrania, que actúa como avanzadilla de los valores liberales. Al haber apoyado la Ukraine Democracy Defense Lend-Lease Act de 2022, Estados Unidos se convierte en el buque insignia del apoyo no solo a Ucrania sino también al mundo entero, en la lucha contra la esclavitud y la tiranía, y a favor de la libertad y la democracia.

    The paper presents George Santayana’s views on society and state as they appear in his works Th e Life of Reason and Dominations and Powers. Santayana states that only the most adapted states and societies are able to win the race of inequality and struggle for survival, which are the driving forces of society. In order to become the society of freedom, however, a society must avoid being dominated by the spirit of mercantilism, relations of material dependence, the pursuit of profit and maniacal desire of gains: this can become possible only in a liberal society. Although Santayana’s ideas on society and state can seem utopic under the present conditions of real life, yet his thought of the crucial role of the US in establishing and maintaining the just and liberal world order remains even more relevant than ever before. Th is idea is in great demand, especially today under conditions of the military aggression of the Russian Federation against Ukraine that acts as an outpost of liberal values. Having supported the Ukraine Democracy Defense Lend-Lease Act of 2022, the US becomes the fl agship of support not only for Ukraine but also for the entire world in struggle against slavery and tyranny for freedom and democracy.
