  La radioterapia es un tratamiento eficaz, seguro y coste- efectivo en el manejo del paciente oncológico. Las técnicas de radioterapia modernas nos permiten realizar tratamientos cada vez más cortos, más precisos, menos tóxicos y más eficaces. Los ancianos con cáncer tienen muy frecuentemente indicación de radioterapia, pero en general se les ofrecen tratamientos menos agresivos, probablemente por las incertidumbres acerca de la evolución natural de su enfermedad o por las preferencias de su médico. La radioterapia no es más tóxica en tejidos más ancianos, pero los tratamientos combinados sí son en general más tóxicos. La indicación de radioterapia en el anciano no debe restringirse por edad, debe evaluarse al paciente en su totalidad. El tratamiento paliativo debe ser integrado en el cuidado de los pacientes ancianos con independencia de su edad.

  Radiotherapy is an effective, safe and cost-effective treat - ment in the management of cancer patients. Modern radio - therapy techniques allow us to perform increasingly shorter, more precise, less toxic and more effective treatments. The elderly with cancer are very frequently indicated for radio - therapy, but in general they are offered less aggressive treat - ments, probably due to uncertainties about the natural history of their disease or because of the preferences of their doctor.

  Radiotherapy has not been shown to be more toxic in older tissues, but combined treatments are generally more toxic.

  The indication for radiotherapy in the elderly should not be restricted by age, the patient status should be evaluated. Pal- liative treatment should be integrated into the care of elderly patients regardless of their age.
