This study shows the effect of two diets for fattening Friesian bulls, one being the conventional system (concentrate plus straw) and the other based on a micro-silage of maize silage, straw and concentrate, both supplied ad libitum. After 8 months on fattening, rumen pH and temperature dynamics were measured using internal wireless boluses. Average, maximum and minimum rumen pH values were higher in the bulls fed with the micro-silage than those fed concentrates (P<0.01). Average rumen temperature was not affected, but rumen from concentrate-fed bulls spent more time at high temperatures than in micro-silage-fed bulls (P<0.05). Rumen pH values reached their maximum at 8:00, beginning afterwards to drop down to the minimum at 22:00. Therefore, the diet based on silage enhanced rumen environment, thus contributing to improve animal welfare.
