  This paper aims to analyze, discuss and reflect on the contribution of hygienists to the emergence of the housing problem in Brazil, based on the speeches and actions of the agents involved. Based on a broad literature review, the work is guided by the processes of social, economic and urban transformations that occurred from the second half of the 19th century to the first decade of the 20th century, with an emphasis on epidemics and their impacts on the urban space and in the housing space. The cities of Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo are the chosen scenarios to discuss reflections on the investigated phenomenon. It appears that the hygienists, personified by different social agents, contributed to the emergence of the housing problem through interventions in the ways of living of the poorest.

  Este trabalho pretende analisar, discutir e tecer reflexões sobre a contribuição dos higienistas para a emergência do problema da habitação no Brasil, a partir dos discursos e ações dos agentes envolvidos. Tendo como base uma ampla revisão da literatura, o trabalho norteia-se pelos processos de transformações sociais, econômicas e urbanas ocorridas a partir da segunda metade do século XIX à primeira década do século XX, com ênfase nas epidemias e seus impactos sobre o espaço urbano e no espaço da moradia. As cidades do Rio de Janeiro e São Paulo são os cenários escolhidos para discorrer reflexões sobre os fenômenos investigados. Verifica-se que os higienistas, personificados por diferentes agentes sociais, contribuíram para a emergência da problemática habitacional a partir das intervenções nas formas de morar dos mais pobres.
