AbstractThe development, predictive and relational validity of an instrument measuring the burnout for Mexican workers from México City is presented: Burnout’ Mexican Scale (EMEDO). Maslach & Jackson (1981, 1982) and Schaufelli, Leiter, Maslach & Jackson (1996) did the theoretical background for this construct which is based on emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, sense of lack of personal accomplishment. Additionally, the instrument contained items for somatic troubles and demographic characteristics. A total sample of 523 workers was selected from private and public enterprises. A group of 50 items about burnout derived in a final instrument with 30 items, after conducting confirmatory factor analysis. Also, the scale obtained Cronbach´s general alpha of 89% as internal consistency. The conceptual and theoretical validity of the constructs was confirmed by the suitable interrelations among the factors as well as their relation to a series of the variables included in the investigation. A promising Mexican scale for Mexican workers has been obtained.
