  • PPARs are candidate genes for fat deposition. We studied the CDS of PPARα, PPARδ and PPARγ genes in Iberian pigs and performed an association study of the polymorphisms found with productive traits. A novel insertion located in 3’UTR of PPARγ gene was associated with the fat and water content of ham muscle and showed a suggestive association with ham yield. The functional involvement of this polymorphism was explored analyzing the genotype effects on the expression of PPARγ and several downstream genes related to lipogenesis in different tissues. Results show some significant effects of the PPARγ insertion on candidate gene expression in adipose and hepatic tissues. The allele with favourable effect on quality and yield traits shows a high frequency in the Torbiscal population studied and should be a potential marker for selection in crossbred populations
