  • The study analyzes the effect of full enriched housing during the finishing phase of fattening on physiological welfare indicators, production and meat quality traits in lambs. A total of 60 male lambs (17.1±0.2 kg), were assigned into two treatments (full enriched or barren), housed indoor for 5 weeks in 6 pens (0.45m2/lamb, 10 lambs/each, 3 replicates). The control group (CG) was finished in the usual conditions of the cooperative feed-lots, without straw and any additional items. The enriched group (EG) was housed in full enriched pens with straw as forage and bedding and a double bunk with ramps. Ad libitum concentrate feed consumption was recorded and lambs were weighted twice to estimate average daily gain. Infrared thermography and blood samples were taken before slaughter. Carcass and meat quality were measured. EG lambs presented signs of acute stress associated to a higher reactivity consequence of the lower visual contact with humans due to the use of the double bunk as a refugee. On the other hand, CG lambs presented some signs of immunedepression consequence of the chronic stress caused by the barren environment. There were no significant differences on productive performance despite that EG lambs presented acute stress. However, EG lambs presented some signs of lesser meat instrumental quality.
