    Este artículo pretende analizar cómo la red urbana europea influyó en el ascenso de Occidente.El artículo comienza examinando las principales aportaciones al debate de las causas de la dominación occidental en el mundo. Después de esto aborda el punto de vista geopolítico para analizar cómo las condiciones espaciales urbanas de la temprana edad moderna influyeron en las principales potencias europeas, y cómo esto les permitió liderar la expansión de Occidente. Para ello el artículo explora la génesis de la red urbana y su entorno geográfico. También aborda cómo las ciudades europeas mantuvieron la riquezadispersa en el continente y limitaron el poder de los Estados. Como consecuencia de esto la red urbana contribuyó a preservar la fragmentación geopolítica, además de impulsar el desarrollo cultural gracias a la aparición de universidades en todo el continente. Estos factores mantuvieron un entorno competitivo y llevaron a los Estados europeos a desarrollar armamentos más avanzados y a fortalecer su poder militar, loque les permitió derrotar a sus rivales no occidentales.

    This article aims to analyze how the European urban network influenced the rise of the West. In this regard, the paper starts examining the main contributions to the debate of the causes of Western domination in the world. Next, it discusses the geopolitical standpoint to analyze how the urban spatial conditions in the early modern period influenced the main European powers and how this allowed them to lead the expansion of the West. In order to do this task, the article explores the genesis of the urban network and its geographical setting. It also addresses how European cities kept the wealth dispersed in the continent and limited States' power. As a result, the urban network contributed to preserving geopolitical fragmentation, besides boosting cultural development thanks to the emergence of universities across the continent. These factors maintained a competitive environment and led the European States to develop more advanced armaments and strengthen their military power, which allowed them to defeat non-Western rivals.
