  • Resumen
    • In France, a differential diagnosis protocol is currently being proposedin collaboration with professional organizations, for the five mainabortive diseases (Q fever, chlamydiosis, toxoplasmosis, salmonellosisand Border disease) observed in small ruminants. It was implementedon a pilot regional scale in the south-west of the country. Submissionswere considered when 3 abortions at least occurred in 7 days or less. Forthis group approach, emphasis was made on direct diagnosis appliedto individual or pooled samples depending on pathogens. Serologicaltests were realized to establish the recent spreading of causative agents. They rested on an increase of the level of the antibody response at15 days apart (chlamydiosis, toxoplasmosis), on the interpretation ofseroagglutination (salmonellosis), or on seroprevalence estimated foreither 10 aborted females (Q fever) or 10 sentinel animals (border diseasevirus). Preliminary results were obtained for 65 abortive outbreaks. The method appeared promising insofar as the elucidation rate of theabortive outbreaks was estimated to 74%. Nevertheless, various pointsremain to be clarified or assessed: interpretation of antibody responselevels, relevance of a semi-quantitative approach for PCR, use of pooledsamples. Further studies still need to be conducted to improve andsimplify this field protocol.
