Carnaval de Mérida, Yucatán, 1850-1940. Una tradición que lucha contra su elitismo

    En este artículo realizo un estudio del carnaval de Mérida, desde sus inicios hasta 1940, siendo mi objetivo evidenciar su trayectoria y la manera en que la élite del poder se apropió de su tradición festiva, y para eso me sirvo de varias fuentes primarias y secundarias, en especial utilizo los archivos de actas de cabildo, periódicos y otras publicaciones.El carnaval era organizado por diversas capas sociales, teniendo en la época del porfiriato su mayor esplendor. Laclave estuvo en las ligas cada vez más fuertes entre las élites políticas, económicas y la fuerza pública, por eso sus intelectuales orgánicos prolongaron el modelo de un carnaval más exclusivo que popular hasta 1940, década en que por fin integró en su estructura las figuras de un Comité del Carnaval y la elección de una reina.

    In this article I carry out research of the Mérida carnival, from its beginnings to 1940, being my objective to make evident its trajectory and the way in which the power elite appropriated its festive tradition, and for that I use several primary and secondary sources, particularly I use the archives of acts of the council, newspapers and other publications.The carnival was organized by various social layers, having its greatest splendor at the time of the porfiriato. The key was in the increasingly stronger leagues between the political and economic elites and the public force, that’s why its organic intellectuals prolonged the model of a carnival that was more exclusive than popular until 1940, a decade in which it finally integrated into its structure the figures of a Carnival Committee and the election of a queen.
