  Sobre la base de una amplia documentación archivística de repositorios madrileños, se pone de relieve la relevancia del sultanato de Marruecos en el marco del Desastre de 1898. De hecho, en el imperio jerifiano se desarrolló a lo largo del año, una larga sucesión de acontecimientos que determinaron la centralidad del período como punto determinante en la apertura de la cuestión marroquí. A la vez que se perfilaban en el territorio norteafricano los cada vez más contrapuestos intereses británico y francés, la diplomacia española desarrolló hasta tres tipos de actuaciones diversas a lo largo de la etapa; con todo, siempre se trató de ejercer acciones de carácter reactivo y defensivo. Desde el inicio de una penetración limitada en el Rif, captando a notables indígenas, para contrarrestar las iniciativas galas de control de la región hasta la consecución de una aproximación al Reino Unido en los temas marroquíes, pasando por el planteamiento de un debate internacional sobre la alteración del statu quo en Marruecos, en favor de España.

  On the basis of extensive archival documentation from Madrid repositories, the relevance of the Sultanate of Morocco in the framework of the Disaster of 1898 is highlighted. In fact, a long succession of events unfolded throughout the year in the Jerifian Empire which determined the centrality of the period as a determining point in the opening of the Moroccan question. At the same time that the increasingly conflicting British and French interests were outlined in the North African territory, Spanish diplomacy developed up to three different types of actions throughout the period; However, they always tried to exercise reactive and defensive actions. From the beginning of a limited penetration in the Rif, attracting notable indigenous people, to counteract the Gallic initiatives of control of the region to the achievement of an approach to the United Kingdom on Moroccan issues, passing through the approach of an international debate on the alteration of the status quo in Morocco, in favor of Spain.
