Advances in NIRS instrumentation have enabled the development of new miniaturized spectrometers that combine NIRS technology with micro-electro mechanical platforms, thus opening up new horizons for industrial NIRS applications. The main objective of this paper is to evaluate the potential of a handheld MEMS instrument versus a bench-top at-line instrumentfor the on-line quality control in a rendering plant. The results obtained show that both instruments produce equations of similar precision and accuracy for the prediction of moisture, crude protein and ashes.
