  • Resumen
    • In Netherlands, a considerable number of regional plants for the conversion of separately collected household biowaste into high quality compost have to be built within the next few years . Of the present composting systems available in the Netherlands indoor aerobic composting is becoming by far the favourite. Still, the feasibility of anaerobic systems is often investigated, mainly because of the possibility of energy recovery from biogas. So the global C02 -emissions can be reduced, and therefore the contribution to the greenhouse effect. However, these systems have not with the exception of one single plant so far, been selected because of: the relatively high costs; the process is complex and sensitive to fluctuactions in biowaste input (flow, and composition); a considerable emission of polluted waste water occurs; and aerobic post- composting is still required to produce a stabilized dry, and odourless compost.

For the design of an aerobic hangar or tunnel composting plant the following aspects are elucidated in the paper: operarational aspects; plant construction materials; plant construction methods ; plant construcction time; and environmental aspects.
