  • The Basel Convention on the Control of Transboundary Movements of Hazardous Wastes and Their Disposal (March 1989) entered into force on 5 May, 1992, after the twentieth instrument of ratification/accession has been deposited as requested by Article 25 of the Convention.

    As of 18 January, 1993, 39 States have ratified or acceded to the Convention, namely: Argentina, Australia, Austria, Bahamas, Bahrain, Brazil, Canada, Chile, China, Cyprus, Czech and Slovak Federal Republic, Egypt, El Salvador, Estonia, Finland, France, Hungary, India, Iran, Jordan, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Maldives, Mauritius, México, Monaco, Nigeria, Norway, · Panamá, Poland, Romania, Saudi Arabia, Senegal, Sri Lanka, Sweden, Switzerland, Syrian Arab Republic, United Arab Emirates, Uruguay.

    Intense work has been going on with the European Economic Community and the United States to ensure that these countries, which ate the main generators of hazardous wastes, become Party to the Convention.
