In this paper I discuss Marius Victorinus’ report on the spelling of Lucius Accius (gramm. 4.4) and make some new suggestions on its text. I come to the con-clusion that Accius treated spelling in a book, probably in his Didascalica, as the criticism of his rules in a satire of Lucilius shows. Accius’ spelling rules had a certain influence on contemporary Latin spelling, since Roman inscriptions from the late second and early first century B. C. realize his rule of double spell-ing of long vowels.
