    Este artículo trata de plantear más interrogantes que certezas. Su objetivo central es identificar los factores históricos fundamentales que dan perfil propio al siglo XXI. Para lograrlo, examinamos las transiciones a los siglos XX y XXI, a través de la comparación de elementos, análogos o diversos, que caracterizaron ambos procesos. Una vez verificadas las diferencias o similitudes entre dichas transiciones, nos concentramos en profundizar los caracteres distintivos y originales del siglo XXI. Ello permite definir los factores esenciales de su inicio, configuración, continuidades y rupturas, respecto de la centuria anterior. En consecuencia, identificamos cuatro fenómenos principales que dan identidad y perfil propio al siglo XXI: el ocaso del sistema internacional liberal originado en el tratado de Versalles (1919); la emergencia de una nueva etapa del sistema capitalista, hegemonizada por el capital financiero; la irrupción de la primera pandemia de la historia universal; y la confrontación entre Estados Unidos y China por la generación y difusión de su poderío tecnológico y su expansión comercial, que definirá cuál de los dos liderará la 4° Revolución Industrial y, por ende, dominará la próxima globalización.

    This article tries to raise more questions than provide certainties. Its main purpose is to identify fundamental historical factors that shape the 21st century’s own profile. To such end, we review the transition to the 20th and the 21st century by comparing elements, that are similar to or different from, those marking both transitions. Upon verifying differences or similarities in both transitions, we focus on digging deeper into the distinctive and original features of the 21st century. This allows us to define the essential elements of its beginning, configuration, continuity and ruptures as regards the previous century. Consequently, we identify four key events that provide the 21st  century with its own profile and identity: the end of the international liberal order emanated from the 1919 Treaty of Versailles; the rise of a new stage of capitalism, characterized by finance capital hegemony; the outbreak of the first Pandemic in the universal history; the confrontation between the United States of America and China for the creation and diffusion of their technological power and their business expansion, that will define which of them will lead the Fourth Industrial Revolution and, therefore, take on a dominant role in the next phase of globalization.
