  • Resumen
    • The beneficial reuse of waste in cement manufacturing is a well-established and growing practice in certain parts of Europe, North America, and Japan. Energetic waste such as waste oils, spents solvents, tires, and municipal refuse are successfully replacing traditional fossil fuels needed to fire cement kilns. Inorganic waste such as combustion ashes, wastewater treatment residues, and other industrial manufacturing1- by-products are replacing virgin raw materials that are quarried or imported to make cement. Similar waste reuse opportunities exist for the Spanish cement industry. Because the Spanish cement industry produces in excess of 28 million metric tons of Portland cement per year, these waste reuse practice can be implemented on a large scale in Spain with the benefits of reducing fuel and raw material cost and solving pressing social problems of waste management at the same time. These benefits cannot be realized, however, without solving significant challenges. This paper will discuss a number of issues relating to waste reuse in the cement industry from the cement manufacturer 's perspective. Discussed in the paper are: Waste types that the cement industry might consider for reuse as well as characteristics of these waste types, Strategies for waste reuse in cement plants, Potential positive and negative impacts that waste reuse can have on the manufacturing process and plant operations, Protection of human health and environmental when waste materials are reused in cement kilns, Employee and public acceptance of waste reuse projects, and Economics incentives and economics drivers associated with reuse. The authors will draw on their first-hand experiences in implementing cement industry waste reuse projects in the United States in describing the opportunities of waste reuse for the Spanish cement industry.
