La gran mayoría de ellos son viviendas de hasta 400 años de antigüedad, en las que han transcurrido muchas vidas y se han hecho muchas reformas. La rehabilitación de una casa del canal debe ser, en consecuencia, un ejercicio de lectura del pasado sin perder de vista el presente. Cada aspecto puede necesitar un planteamiento distinto: conservación, restauración, reconstrucción e incluso adición. Si bien los dos primeros suponen un enfoque estático de la tradición en la que el patrimonio se deja accesible para generaciones venideras, esto no está reñido con la costumbre de reformar una vivienda para adaptarla a las necesidades actuales y futuras.

  The historic city center of Amsterdam is full of monumental buildings, most of which are dwellings up to 400 years old. Many lives have been lived there, and consequently many alterations have been made. Restoring a canal house is therefore an exercise in reading the past while simultaneously considering the present. Each aspect can require a different approach: conservation, restoration, reconstruction, and even addition. For while the first two involve a static approach to tradition in which heritage is kept accessible to future generations, this is not at odds with the tradition of altering a home to suit current and future needs.
