Resumen de Isidro Parga Pondal (1900-1986) y el Instituto Geológico y Minero de España. Una historia de encuentros y desencuentros

  El Laboratorio Xeolóxico de Laxe, fundado por el geoquímico Isidro Parga Pondal en los años 40 del siglo XX, fue un centro relevante para el estudio de la geología gallega, reuniendo a investigadores nacionales y extranjeros. Su antecedente se encuentra en el Laboratorio de Xeoquímica da Universidade e do Seminario de Estudos Galegos, creado también por Parga Pondal a comienzos de los años 30 en la Universidad de Santiago. En esa fecha comenzó su relación con el Instituto Geológico y Minero de España a través del ingeniero de minas Primitivo Hernández-Sampelayo quien, tras la Guerra Civil y la expulsión de Parga Pondal del ámbito universitario, promovió el establecimiento en Galicia de una sede territorial del IGME con don Isidro al frente. Esto no fue posible, pero sí se llegó a articular la colaboración de Parga Pondal con el plan cartográfico a través de la realización de hojas a escala 1:50.000 de Galicia y de la edición de otros mapas. Los problemas detectados por Parga Pondal en el diseño del plan cartográfico general del IGME se tradujeron en unos desacuerdos difíciles de superar, que se agravaron ante la imposibilidad de la participación del Laboratorio Xeolóxico de Laxe, por motivos administrativos, en el nuevo plan cartográfico a escala 1:50.000 del IGME, el plan MAGNA.

  The Laboratorio Xeolóxico de Laxe, founded by the geochemist Isidro Parga Pondal in the 1940s, was a relevant center for the study of Galician geology. The activity carried out in it allowed him to collect in a few years a large amount of data. It was also a recognized research center beyond our borders, bringing together national and foreign geologists with a common goal. Its antecedents can be found in the Laboratorio de Xeoquímica da Universidade e do Seminario de Estudos Galegos (Geochemistry Laboratory of the University and the Seminary of Galician Studies) also created by Parga Pondal in the early 1930s at the University of Santiago. On that date he began his relationship with the Geological and Mining Institute of Spain through the mining engineer Primitivo Hernández-Sampelayo who, after the Civil War and the expulsion of Parga Pondal from the university, promoted the establishment in Galicia of a territorial office of the Institute, in which Parga Pondal would be in charge. This was not possible, but Parga’s collaboration with the mappping plan was articulated through the making of 1:50,000 scale geological sheets of Galicia, as well as the publication of other maps at different scales. The problems detected by Parga Pondal in the design of the mapping plan of the IGME resulted in some disagreements that were difficult to overcome. They were aggravated by the impossibility of the participation of the Laboratorio Xeolóxico de Laxe, for administrative reasons, in the new IGME’s geological mapping design at a scale 1:50,000, the MAGNA plan. In any case, the IGME incorporated into its maps the information obtained by Parga Pondal and by the geology schools that he coordinated from the Laboratorio Xeolóxico de Laxe, which allowed, among other achievements, for Galicia to be the first region in Spain to have a complete geological cartography at scale 1:50,000.
