Dioxins and furans are a chemical compound family formed from organochlorined precursors or chlorine molecules and aromatic compounds in high temperature reaction conditions and lack of oxygen. These compounds are highly toxic for animal life which added to their great chemical stability and bioabsorption may cause serious health problems in live beings, originating disorders in skin, liver and the immunological system and have as well cancerous effects on human beings. Since solid municipal wastes and assimilable to municipal ones are composed of chlorine molecules, dioxins and furans are produced in the pyrolysis or incineration disposal processes of this sort of wastes. This article evaluates the possible dioxins and furans forming mechanisms as well as present disposal possibilities, including a comparative study on both thermal treatment choices.
