La Corte Interamericana de Derechos Humanos declaró responsable internacionalmente al Estado de El Salvador por violar derechos humanos fundamentales de Manuela, una madre joven, pobre, analfabeta, que frente a una emergencia obstétrica llegó a un hospital para ser atendida por sus dolencias. Allí, se la señaló por haberse provocado presuntamente un aborto, terminó siendo imputada y condenada por el supuesto homicidio de su hijo recién nacido.
El proceso penal llevado a cabo estuvo viciado por estereotipos de género y no se respetaron sus garantías judiciales, lo que condujo a la Comisión Interamericana, a solicitud de los representantes de la víctima y su familia, a someter el caso a la Corte Interamericana.

The Inter-American Court of Human Rights declared El Salvador internationally responsible for violating the fundamental human rights of Manuela, a young, poor, illiterate mother who, faced with an obstetric emergency, arrived at a hospital to be treated for her ailments. There, she was pointed out for having allegedly caused an abortion, she ended up being charged and convicted of the alleged murder of her newborn son.The criminal process carried out was vitiated by gender stereotypes and its judicial guarantees were not respected, which led the Inter-American Commission, at the request of the representatives of the victim and her family, to submit the case to the Inter-American Court.
