La literatura fantástica moderna y la obra de Clark Ashton Smith han atraído más atención académica recientemente, en paralelo con el desarrollo del estudio de las fuentes clásicas en el género fantástico. Este artículo tiene como objetivo determinar cómo el abundante uso de motivos clásicos de Smith varía respecto de su origen clásico y cómo los reinterpreta mediante su propia cosmovisión pesimista. Su relato “The Maze of the Enchanter” (1933), leído como una versión oscura del mito estándar de Teseo y el Minotauro, sirve como punto de partida para entender la subversión de motivos clásicos en Smith y su importancia dentro de la estética del autor.

Modern fantasy and the work of Clark Ashton Smith have recently attracted the attention of scholars, in parallel with the increase of studies discussing the classical sources of the genre. This paper aims to determine how Smith’s abundant use of classical motifs varies from their classical origin and how he reinterprets them through his own pessimistic worldview. “The Maze of the Enchanter” (1933), when read as a dark version of the standard myth of Theseus and the Minotaur, serves as a starting point to understand the mitigation of classical motifs in Smith and their significance within the author’s aesthetics.
