  • Resumen
    • Nor do I argue that Machado intends or aspires to lead the reader to increased civic engagement; we cannot know what his intentions were. Yet even in a democracy, citizens are too often treated as unequal because of money, social status, power, skin color, religion, gender, sexual orientation, or age. Much the same point is made by Jean-Marie Schaeffer, in Pourquoi la fiction? (1999), who also argues that reading literature can lead us to political action. [...]there is nothing novel, so to speak, about regarding Machado in this very context, as a writer who leads his reader to practice those skills, chiefly in the area of critical thinking, that strengthen a democratic society.
