A fines del siglo XVI, los frailes tuvieron su propia interpretación sobre la congregación de pueblos de indios, que difería en puntos importantes del proyecto virreinal. Su meta fue dosificar las reducciones y permitir, en acuerdo con los indios, sólo aquellas que impactaran menos el status quo. En este trabajo se analizan los intereses defendidos, los argumentos y la participación de los frailes frente al proceso de congregación general impulsado por los virreyes en el centro de Nueva España.

At the end of the 16th century, the friars had their own interpretation of the congregation of indigenous peoples, wich differed in important point from the viceregal project. Theis goal was to dose the reductions and allow, according to the Indians, only those that least impacted the status quo. In the present work, the interests defended, the arguments and the participation of the friars are analyzed in the face of the general congregation process promoted by the viceroy in the center of New Spain
