Stimulated by wideranging studies investigating the final disposal of radioactive wastes, German industry has for many years been interested in also disposing of non- nuclear industrial wastes in the geological underground, in particular in salt rock.
Although research and publications on this topic have concentrated mainly on the subsurface isolation from the biosphere of highly toxic wastes, the utilisation of mineral bulk residues of low contamination levels as a dam building material or backfill material in mining has grown, because of the overlapping of interests of the mining companies and the generators of the residues. As a consequence of mining raw materials, large openings are created which have in part to be backfilled to assure integrity of the rock mass. The use of residues from mining is not always possible for economic reasons, whereas residues from sources outside mining can, in constrast, represent a welcome additional income.
