  A pesar de que los artesanos han sido reconocidos como parte del patrimonio cultural intangible, sus condiciones de vida siguen siendo precarias en sumayoría, lo cual limita la permanencia de su trabajo. No obstante, quienes continúan con el trabajo artesanal, reproducen los significados de su labor yfavorecen la economía local. El objetivo de la investigación es analizar los modos de vida de los alfareros de Atzompa en dos dimensiones: la cultura y el territorio. El trabajo de campo se realizó, bajo una investigación cualitativa, de enero de 2017 a diciembre de 2019; las técnicas utilizadas fueron la observación participante durante un año festivo, seis talleres con 77 artesanos y 15 entrevistas a profundidad. Se encontró que los alfareros reproducen la vida material y simbólica; generan remuneración para la supervivencia, y a la vez, sostienen la autonomía familiar, el aprendizaje y la enseñanza continua, la espiritualidad y el autorreconocimiento y orgullo de ser alfarero. Estos significados dotan sentido ser alfarero y, por tanto, favorecen su permanencia.

  Despite the fact that artisans have been recognized as part of the intangible cultural heritage, their living conditions remain mostly precarious, whichlimits the permanence of their work. However, those who continue with the artisan work reproduce the meanings of their work and favor the local economy. The objective of the research is to analyze the ways of life of the Atzompa potters in two dimensions: culture and territory. The field research was done through a qualitative study from January 2017 to December 2019. The techniques used were participative observation over a festive year, which was carried out in six workshops with 77 craftsmen and 15 in-depth interviews. The research revealed that potters replicate material and symbolic life, create an allowance for their livelihood and to allow their families autonomy, to maintain their craft’s learning, teaching, spirituality, self-recognition and pride of being a potter. These meanings give sense to be a potter and, therefore, contribute to their permanence.
