How can we free our words and practices when they have been shaped by the imperialism of the neoliberal thought? How to revive collective imagination in a world in which all resistance is stifled by the faceless force of Numbers? For the authors of the liber amicorum in homage to the eminent French jurist and scholar Alain Supiot, the answer is unequivocal—and it is in the title of the book: by a concert of civilizations.
In the following pages, I attempt to offer readers some keys to navigate this exceptional tribute to the author of Critique du droit du travail, Homo Juridicus, L’esprit de Philadelphie, La gouvernance par les nombres, chief editor of the groundbreaking European Union—commissioned report Au-delà de l’emploi “to navigate,” because it is indeed, a journey: rich, interdisciplinary, multilingual, just like the uomo universale Supiot. The alphabetical presentation chosen by the editors dissuades the reader from embarking on the adventure. Armed with the following map though, I hope that she will dive into the reading of these atypical Mélanges, impressive in their diversity.
