    La Sociedad Mexicana de Geografía y Estadística (SMGEJ fue la primera entidad que organizó la investigación científica en México y también el primer cuerpo institucional para el desarrollo y la práctica de la geografía. Al cumplirse 170 años de su fundación como Instituto Nacional de Geografía y Estadística, este ensayo reflexiona sobre el papel que desempeñó la SMGE en la organización de la ciencia y la edificación del país en el siglo XIX.

    The Mexican Geography and Statistics Association (Sociedad Mexicans de Geografía y Estadística, SMGE) was the first entity created to organize scientific research in Mexico. It was also the first institution that pursued the development and practice of geography. In the 170 anniversary of its foundation as Instituto Nacional de Geografía y Estadística, this work considers the association's role in the organization of science and the building of the nation during the nineteenth century.
