Accelerated population growth, combined with a substantial migration from rural to urban areas, is placing considerable strains on the provision of basic services in a number of cities in less developed countries. Some of the services that are severely impacted include water supply, solid waste collection and disposal, and sewerage. Insufficient coverage of solid waste collection, improperly managed final disposition of the wastes, combined with inadequate wastewater collection and treatment, can contaminate the sources of water supply and cause serious threats to public health and the environment.
