The present article provides a current overview of the ''state of the art'' at medical waste management and its regulations in Spain (national and local north-west autonomic government). Today, medical waste generators are no longer viewed as comprising only the larger hospitals and laboratories, but include smaller generators such as dental offices, clinics, etc. All of this led to the need to develop a national law about medical waste in order to achieve a proper and safe management of medical waste. This law from sanitary ministry has been persecuted over the last 7 years by local governments without success at the moment.
