    En la década de 1970, la Escuela de Artes Musicales acoge la idea de llevar la formación musical a las regiones del país, para fomentar el arte de los sonidos en poblaciones con poca o casi nula actividad artística. La propuesta era un hecho sin precedentes para la época; de ahí nace la Etapa Básica de Música en Santa Cruz, Guanacaste, fundada en 1978 por un equipo de profesores de Artes Musicales, liderados por el Lic. Jorge Acevedo Vargas, apoyado por el Centro Regional de Guanacaste y por un comité local con visión futurista que dedicó todos sus esfuerzos para plasmar el proyecto. Ahora bien, la misión no solo consistía en abrir el proyecto, sino también, integrar la formación académica musical universal y la tradición oral de Guanacaste, a fin de mantener y difundir, el acervo cultural musical de la provincia: una idea innovadora y poco desarrollada por el sistema musical costarricense. Desde los primeros días, la interacción entre la sociedad, representada por las familias y la Universidad representada por los profesores de Artes Musicales, integraron un equipo que hasta hoy se mantiene buscando recursos económicos, físicos y humanos para mantener y consolidar el sueño de la enseñanza musical en la región. El producto de ese esfuerzo se ve reflejado en la asistencia a los cursos de más de 8.000 niños y jóvenes de la región. Se han realizado más de 700 presentaciones musicales, reuniendo una asistencia de alrededor de 100.000 personas en 2500 horas de música tradicional y universal, dentro y fuera del país. Ese crecimiento se ha visto consolidado en artículos, festivales internacionales y discos. En el transcurso de los años se consolidó el proyecto sobre el acervo musical tradicional de Guanacaste. El objetivo de este artículo consiste en describir los procesos y actividades generadas por la Escuela de Artes Musicales, para implementar una Etapa Básica de Música en Santa Cruz Guanacaste, a fin de aportar información sintética y analítica sobre su quehacer. Para cumplir con ello, la investigación se fundamenta en el paradigma cualitativo, diseño descriptivo y exploratorio, utilizando como fuentes de información y sujetos de análisis, tres elementos: a) participantes del proyecto, b) documentos escritos e informes, c) discografía. Dentro de este entorno se empleará la entrevista abierta, reseñas y se triangulará la información con los docentes con más trayectoria dentro del proyecto

    During the 1970’s, the School of Musical Arts welcomed the idea of bringing musical education to more remote areas of the country to encourage the art of sounds in populations with little or almost inexistent artistic activity. This proposal was unheard of at the time and through it, the “Etapa Básica de Música” (“Foundational Stage of Music”) in Santa Cruz, Guanacaste was born. This institution was founded in 1978 by a group of music teachers, led by Prof. Jorge Acevedo Vargas, and supported by the Regional Center of Guanacaste and by a local committee with long-term vision that dedicated all its efforts to bring the project to fruition. The mission of this project consisted not only in getting it established, but also in integrating a comprehensive study of academic music and that of the oral tradition of music in Guanacaste in order to maintain and disseminate the cultural and musical roots of the province, an innovative idea not developed or encompassed by the system of music education in Costa Rica at the time. From its inception, the interaction within this society, represented on one side by the families and on the other by the University’s music teachers, became a team that to this day, continues to work searching for resources (economic, infrastructural, and human) in order to maintain and consolidate the dream of musical education in the region. The product of these efforts is reflected in the attendance to classes by more than 8,000 children and youth in the region.

    More than 700 presentations have been given, gathering attendance of around 100,000 people in around 2,500 hours of traditional and academic music, both within the country and abroad. This growth has been documented in articles, international festivals, and recordings, and over the years, the project about the cultural roots of traditional music in Guanacaste has been established. The goal of this article is to describe the processes and activities generated by the School of Musical Arts to implement a Foundational Stage of Music in Santa Cruz, Guanacaste, in order to afford synthesized and analytical information about its ongoing activities. In order to do so, the research is based on the qualitative paradigm and the descriptive and exploratory design, using as its sources of information and subjects of analysis, three elements: 1) participants in the project, 2) written documents and reports, 3) discography. Within this context, open interviews and reviews will be used and this information will be coordinated with the teachers with longer trajectory in the project.
