When words like mai, ningú,res, etc. in negative sentences occur in preverbal position, Fabra (1918/1933) considered that the omission of the negation adverb no was admissible, though not preferable. This is what we refer to as the «secondary option». The aim of the article is to show, through the study of the prescription’s transmission in schoolbooks, style manuals and prescriptive grammars, that it may have been subject to a restrictive interpretation in favour of the structure that maintains two negative elements, on the grounds that it was hierarchically superior.
