The two glass workshops, dated to the end of the 1st c. AD and the 2nd c. AD, situated on the rue Marie-Clémence Fouriaux constitute the first discovery of ancient glass production sites in Reims. These ensembles fill an extensive gap in our knowledge of the glass economy within the Reims territory. The earliest workshop is rather poorly preserved and can only be identified by the presence of a production kiln. On the other hand, the later workshop was discovered in nearly perfect condition, thus allowing for an understanding of the spatial organization of the site as a whole. The establishment was organized as follows: a room gathering the production structures on the street side, an intermediate storage room and a courtyard out back for waste disposal. Although the layout of the building can be compared to other Gallo-Roman workshops (domed ovens, pits or hearths for annealing, and waste disposal areas), the construction technique differs, in that raw earth materials (bricks, cob) were frequently used instead of the typical terracotta materials. The shape of the intended finished products is not identifiable, though it was possible to ascertain that they were made of standardized, colorless, blue-green glass, which is a mixture of antimony and manganese bleached glass.
