The paper highlights the competition between the centonarii and the fabri of the colonia Aurelia Apulensis in Dacia to make their scholae more beautiful and monumental. In other to do that, the analysis focuses on two inscriptions (CIL III, 1174; 1212) in which the very rare word aetoma appears; a word that occurs only six times in Latin epigraphy. The study of this documentation offers the opportunity to draw more general conclusions about the collegia's ability to take an intermediate position in the hierarchy of groups that made up the civic community.
