  El mejor astrónomo observador de todos los tiempos, y un gran estudioso de la "construcción de los cielos", William Herschel, es una figura poco conocida por el gran público. Sin embargo, su biografía es apasionante y su legado científico, junto con las aportaciones de su hermana Caroline y su hijo John, uno de los más importantes de la historia de la astronomía.

  Además de ser el descubridor de Urano, William Herschel fue el mayor constructor de telescopios de la historia, el descubridor de la radiación infrarroja de los astros, y un auténtico pionero de la astronomía estelar, del estudio de la Galaxia y de la exploración del cielo profundo.

  Para conmemorar el bicentenario del fallecimiento de William Herschel (25 de agosto de 1822) se han programado numerosas actividades, a las que viene a sumarse este artículo que perfila la figura del astrónomo, subraya su inmenso legado científico y rememora la historia del gran telescopio de 25 pies que construyó para nuestro Real Observatorio Astronómico de Madrid. Este telescopio, posiblemente el mejor de todos los que había construido Herschel, apenas se utilizó, pero fue clave en la historia del Observatorio

  The best observational astronomer of all times, and a great expert on the "construction of the heavens", William Herschel, is a figure not well known by the general public. However, his biography is fascinating, and his sicentific legacy -along with the constributions of his sister Caroline and his son John-, one of the most important in the history of astronomy.

  In addition to being the discoverer of Uranus, William Herschel was the gratest telescope builder in history, the discoverer of the infrared radiation of the stars, and a true pioneer of stellar astronomy, the study of the Galaxy, and the exploration of the deep sky.

  To commemorate the bicentennial of the death of William Herschel (August 25, 1822), numerous activities have been organised, including this article that outlines the figure of the astronomer, underlines his immense scientific legacy and recalls the history of the great telescope of 25 feet that he built for our Royal Astronomical Observatory of Madrid. This telescope, possibly the best of all those that Herschel built, was used for a very short time, but it was key in the history of the Observatory.
