  Managing mutual understanding is a collaborative work performed by speaker and cospeaker to ensure that they actually understand each other sufficiently. The speaker mostly does the work in anticipation and then in verification. The cospeaker sheds a critical look on the input given to them and on the quality of their interpretation, in the limits of their needs. Being skilled at managing the cobuilding of mutual understanding is generally useful in conversation, but it is potentially crucial in conversations in an other language. The analysis of corpora of administrative conversations (in French, between native and non-native speakers) allowed to establish the means available to the participants to managing mutual understanding. The article presents the possible consequences that mutual understanding management can imply. That leads to the criteria and parameters that the participants take into account to decide how they will actaully manage it. And then from there, the author goes on to suggest pedagogical goals in the learning of another language.

  La gestion de l’intercompréhension est le travail commun qu’effectuent locuteur et interlocuteur pour s’assurer qu’ils se comprennent bien. Le locuteur effectue principalement ce travail en anticipation et en vérification a posteriori. L’interlocuteur porte un regard critique sur l’input fourni et sur la qualité de son interprétation, dans la mesure de ses besoins. Savoir participer à la gestion de l’intercompréhension est utile en général dans les interactions, mais potentiellement crucial dans les interactions exolingues. L’analyse de corpus d’interactions administratives exolingues (en français) a permis de dégager les moyens dont disposent les interactants. L’article présentera ce qu’implique la gestion de l’intercompréhension ; cela permettra de répertorier différents critères et paramètres pris en compte dans la décision de mise en œuvre d’une action ou d’une réaction, puis sur les objectifs pédagogiques envisageables dans l’apprentissage d’une langue étrangère.
