    Las dictaduras de Salazar y Franco estrecharon sus lazos con la firma del Tratado de amistad y no agresión de 1939. Lo corroboraron mediante varios Protocolos adicionales y el conocido Pacto Ibérico. El eje central de esos acuerdos buscó siempre el respeto íntegro de la frontera que les separaba, pero a pesar del buen entendimiento y la buena voluntad, hubo un asunto que llegó a incordiar a ambas partes: la histórica disputa por la ciudad de Olivenza (Olivença) y su entorno. El surgimiento de diversas organizaciones irredentistas portuguesas que reclamaban ese territorio limítrofe fomentó la discordia y la desconfianza diplomática, lo que sirvió de contrapunto a los acercamientos bilaterales durante aquellos años. El presente artículo analiza la gestación de aquel litigio fronterizo, el papel del irredentismo como actor de presión y su influencia en las relaciones entre la España franquista y el Estado Novo. Lo hace desde las relaciones Internacionales y con documentación de archivo inédita. Se concluye destacando la importancia de la cuestión oliventina y resaltando los grises existentes entre los dos regímenes.

    The dictatorships of Salazar and Franco strengthened their ties through the signing of the Treaty of Friendship and Non-Aggression of 1939. They corroborated the treaty through various additional Protocols and the well-known Iberian Pact. The central axis of these agreements always sought full respect for the border that separated the two countries. But despite the understanding and good will, there was an issue that bothered both parties: the historic dispute over the city of Olivenza (Olivença) and its surroundings. The emergence of various Portuguese irredentist organizations that laid claim to this border territory fostered diplomatic discord and mistrust, serving as a counterpoint to the bilateral approaches of the time. This article analyses the gestation of that border dispute, the role of irredentism as a source of pressure and its influence on the relations between Franco’s Spain and the Estado Novo. It does this from International Relations perspective and using unpublished archive documentation. It concludes by highlighting the importance of the Olivenza issue and highlighting the grey areas in the approaches of the two regimes.
