This article examines the link between the concept of essence and the sensory experience of perfume in María Zambrano’s thinking. The author explores the theorization of sensation and the senses in Zambrano’s work, going on to suggest that it is underpinned by a view of human existence as a temporal form of transcendence that goes through the different seasons, or ages of the human being. The aim is to draw out the originality of Zambrano’s pneumatic philosophy and her concept of the human being as evanescent transcendence.
