  • Resumen
    • This paper responds to the invitation of of the Journal of Metaphysics’ editors to express one’s own philosophical point of view on the dramatic emergency linked to the present pandemic. The text develops along four dense paragraphs respectively entitled: 1. Witness. 2. A minimum of news and first personal considerations. 3.

The pandemic and the evil. 4. Prediction. The experience of the not only health crisis caused by the global spread of covid-19 offers the author the opportunity for an in-depth historical and philosophical investigation critically focused on the protean nature of evil and the inadequacy of the ancient philosophical distinctions of physical, moral, metaphysical evil to answer, today, to the philosophical questions raised by the worldwide spread of the disease. Without neglecting the economic, social and political implications of the pandemic and without underestimating the correlated risks of anti-liberal and anti-democratic drifts inherent in the state of emergency, the paper inscribes the crisis caused by the pandemic in a much broader critical context and re-proposes, at the same time, the centrality of the ethical and metaphysical discourse in order to orient oneself with prudence and wisdom in a historical juncture which, however new and unexpected it may be, it is not at all lacking in connections and analogies with past experiences that allow, to some extent, to pre-figure and prepare for the future.
